Matt Ocre Nicholas Hoult , a young civil affairs soldier with the Army Reserves slams his hand in the door of a Humvee in an attempt to get sent home.
Narration reveals that he enlisted in July , in order to get money for college. Some time later, he is seen with a cast on his arm, his attempt having been unsuccessful.
His cast gets cut off just in time to be sent to Baghdad. During the battle, Ocre spots a sniper and Sergeant Dylan Chutsky Glen Powell calls in a helicopter strike that destroys the building the sniper is in.
The film then skips forward to some time after the battle, when Ocre's squad is tasked with repairing a broken water system in the dangerous village of Baqubah.
They arrive in the village and meet up with a Special Forces unit led by Cpt. Syverson Henry Cavill.
Syverson introduces them to their interpreter and explains that they are to travel to the pump station and fill a tanker with water to bring back to the village every day.
At the station, the Army engineers working on the pump explain that it will take many weeks to finish repairs, but that the repairs would go much faster if Harper could recruit some of the villagers to help.
Back at the village, they inform the locals that they will pay anyone who shows up to work the next morning. However, when the morning comes, there is no one there by the time they are ready to leave.
With no labor forthcoming from the village, they are forced to help the engineers themselves. During one return trip, a vehicle is spotted coming up behind them at high speed.
They stopped the vehicle and interrogated the driver, but learn he was taking his young daughter to another village for medicine.
During another trip, they are attacked by several insurgents with small arms, who shoot holes in the tank. The next day, while passing out water, gunfire breaks out.
They engage in a pitched firefight with several enemy shooting from the rooftops, during which Sergeant Chutsky is killed. After finally getting help from Kadeer, the administrator of the local school played by Navid Negahban , who desperately needs water to keep the school open, they begin making better progress on the station.
One morning, none of the Iraqis show up to work and the squad returns to the village, where they find the administrator's body burned and tied to a stake in the schoolyard.
The administrator's brother Arif Nabil Elouahabi angrily tells Syverson where the insurgents have been meeting.
A plan is quickly formed to attack them that night. The attacks succeeds, killing several enemy and capturing more, but Cpl.

However, soon after, the pump station is hit by an Improvised explosive device brought by one of the worker in a suicide bombing, destroying all of the work done by the group and killing several Americans and Iraqis.

Coming home and life after is a different story. The music score was subtle and the end title was really good. Similar to Brian Eno.
Great to see another quality Netflix original. After seeing some other disappointing attempts at portraying the Afghanistan and Iraq war, Sand Castle was a very pleasant surprise.
The characters were believable and the story convincing, telling the difficulties faced by American soldiers and Iraqi civilians alike.
It didn't need over-exaggerated patriotism nor jingoism, nor did it rely upon over the top action scenes nor special effects.
I was drawn in by the characters and the story, and although it left me wanting more this was in a good way - what it said it said well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and have no hesitation in recommending it. Sand Castle will likely resonate with general audiences. The acting in it is good for the most part, as Nick Hoult pulls of his part very well.
His acting is pretty spot on and the story telling around his character is well done. Logan Marshal-Green did a superb job in his role as a get-it-done SSG who reminded me of a couple different platoon sergeants I'd worked with while in Baghdad.
The story itself is fine, and even though the outcome was predictable, I didn't stop rooting for the guys to get it done.
Where the movie fell short for me was in the details. Coimbra should have hired a decent military adviser to help him out.
A good example is found within the first few seconds of the movie, as Hoult's character strolls to a great tune by Queens of the Stone Age through a staging area in Kuwait camp New York?
M60 tanks. I kid you not. As an M1A1 Tanker myself, I knew at this point there were going to be some obvious flaws-and there are quite a few others-but they didn't really detract from the story.
I'd probably recommend this movie to others for the story alone. If you are former military, just know what you are in for. A decent and straightforward War movie.
It's not very combat centered, but rather focuses on the soldier's internal conflicts. I've seen plenty of War films like this before and unfortunately this one doesn't stand out as that unique compared to many others.
It feels like an extension of something you'd see on "Generation Kill". It's not necessarily a bad thing, because if that is your thing then you are gonna like this movie.
I will give it this though; I like the story-line of the soldier's giving water to the people in the village. That's actually one of the main missions the characters are given.
I appreciate that it explores a simple story like that. Giving water to the people in need is ultimately more important than winning a war.
Nicholas Hoult's character seems to find a purpose of being part of the army by doing this act of kindness because he feels that he finally does some good.
So, that aspect was well portrayed in this movie. Henry Cavill is not in the movie that much, but whenever he is on screen he plays his supporting character well.
I think they should have utilized him much more, since he really was doing such a good job playing a kind of eccentric captain.
A different role compared to what he has played before. The editing in some scenes distracted me. They started zooming in the image on the same shot a few times and I didn't like that.
It's better to just let the scene play out in one shot. Don't start jump-cutting and zooming it in all the sudden. You have different angles for that.
The music is great. Some parts gave me "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Apocalypse Now" vibes and the end credits song is very relaxing.
So, the movie leaves you with a nice feeling because of the music. It's not bad as I said, just a tad underwhelming.
You can watch it and enjoy just fine. This was a surprisingly good film. Seen through the eyes of a private who initially wanted out of the army, this film shows the Iraq conflict from all angles.
It's a slow burner with numerous scenes of high tension, combat action, understanding and sadness. Filmed well, acted well, written well, and cast well this is an intelligent war film.
TopDawgCritic 13 July Lots of war-type films have come out over the years, and most are OK to meh, but something about this one was done better than most.
Better than I expected, although slowly paced. For me, this movie was great in a number of ways. The movie showed the complexity of the war and the various parties to it.
The main characters are well developed and multi-dimensional, their motivations seem real and understandable.
Matt Ocre joined the reserves to pay for college and ends up fighting in Iraq. Matt initially wants no part of the war and breaks his own hand to try and get sent home.
Gradually he comes to really believe the Americans can make a difference for the civilians. Even after several setbacks Matt believes in the mission of fixing the water system so the locals can have water again.
It would be really hard fighting an enemy where the innocent bystanders look just like the enemy. The action scenes seemed realistic in that the Americans were not invincible warriors and suffered losses even with their superior weapons and body armour.
The war was hard on everyone but particularly hard on the innocent civilians who were caught between the Americans and the enemy.
Sand Castle was an amazing depiction of the mental and physical struggles a soldier goes through before, during, and after war.
The characters showed immense pain, fear, pleasure, exhaustion, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and am now a fan of the amazing actors and actresses who were casted.
Would definitely recommend. Freedom 31 July Rather than having an agenda of trying to convince us that "War is Hell" or "War is Glorious", it simply tells an interesting story of a group of soldiers who were trying to provide water for Iraqi civilians.
The cast is very good, it was nice to see some new faces instead of overexposed, worn-out actors. The direction is proficient, the combat scenes are realistic and convincing.
What i hated the most that they had some good actors but they didn't use they full potential such as Henry Cavill and Nicholas Hoult and speaking of Henry Cavill hell i still seeing superman when i look at him!
I'm not one to take the time to review movies but this one really got to me. Now like all service members know, military movies are always going to stretch fiction for dramatic purposes.
That being said, this movie really comes off as having little to no research done to attempt to show any accuracy in its story. Chris Roessner's script Sand Castle , based on his own experience as a machine gunner in Iraq's Sunni Triangle , appeared among the unproduced Black List screenplays.
Toby Kebbell was cast in the film to play Sergeant Harper. Voltage Pictures took over handling the international sales.
Principal photography on the film began on November 2, In May , Netflix acquired the distribution rights to the film.
